These vegan mozzarella sticks deliver all the indulgence of the classic appetizer without any dairy. Freezing the cheese beforehand ensures a gooey, melty center that contrasts perfectly with a golden, crispy breadcrumb exterior. The seasoned panko adds crunch and flavor, with hints of garlic, onion, and paprika that make every bite savory and satisfying.

Whether baked or fried, these sticks are irresistible finger foods for parties, game nights, or cozy evenings at home. Paired with a rich, tangy marinara, they mimic the comfort and nostalgia of traditional mozzarella sticks while remaining fully plant-based.

Perfect for serving as an appetizer or snack, these vegan mozzarella sticks are easy to make ahead, freeze, and cook whenever you want a quick, melty, cheesy treat that’s entirely cruelty-free.

Vegan Mozzarella Sticks

Ingredients

Cheese Layer

  • 1 block vegan mozzarella cheese (about 8 oz), firm and sliceable

  • Optional: vegan parmesan for extra flavor

Breading

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)

  • ½ cup unsweetened plant-based milk

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (to make vegan “buttermilk”)

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional for frying

  • Oil for frying (can also bake for a healthier version)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cheese
Cut the vegan mozzarella block into sticks, about ¼–½ inch thick. Place on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 1–2 hours to help them hold their shape during breading.

  2. Set up breading stations

    • Bowl 1: Flour

    • Bowl 2: Plant-based milk + apple cider vinegar

    • Bowl 3: Panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper

  3. Bread the sticks
Dip each cheese stick into flour, then milk mixture, then coat in seasoned breadcrumbs. For extra crispiness, repeat the milk + breadcrumb step for a double coating. Place on a tray and freeze for another 30 minutes to prevent melting too fast during cooking.

  4. Cook the mozzarella sticks

    • Frying: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry sticks for 2–3 minutes until golden and crispy, flipping carefully.

    • Baking: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place sticks on a parchment-lined tray and bake for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.

  5. Serve
Serve hot with marinara sauce or vegan ranch for dipping.
