Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Ingredients
Beef
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp oil
Vegetables
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
Sauce
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional but adds depth)
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (slurry)
- Black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Marinate beef
Toss sliced steak with soy sauce, cornstarch, and oil. Let sit 10–15 minutes. - Sear the beef
Heat a wok or large skillet on high heat until very hot.
Sear beef in batches for 1–2 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside. - Cook vegetables
In the same pan, add a little oil. Stir-fry onions and peppers for 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
Add garlic and ginger and cook 30 seconds. - Add sauce
Mix sauce ingredients (except slurry) and pour into the pan. Bring to a simmer. - Thicken
Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until sauce turns glossy and slightly thick. - Combine
Return beef to the pan and toss everything together for 1–2 minutes until coated. - Finish
Drizzle with sesame oil and a pinch of black pepper.
