Easy Air Fryer Kale Chips

Servings

2–3 snack portions

Prep Time

10 minutes

Cook Time

5–7 minutes per batch

Ingredients

  • 1 large bunch fresh kale (curly or lacinato)

  • 1–2 teaspoons olive oil or avocado oil

  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt (adjust to taste)

Optional Seasonings

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika

  • Nutritional yeast, to taste

  • Freshly ground black pepper

  • Chili flakes or cayenne (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the kale

    • Remove thick stems from the kale leaves.

    • Tear leaves into large bite-sized pieces (they shrink when cooked).

    • Wash thoroughly and dry completely using a salad spinner or clean towel.
Dry kale is essential for crisp chips.

  2. Season

    • Place kale in a large bowl.

    • Drizzle with oil and massage gently for 30–60 seconds until leaves are lightly coated and slightly softened.

    • Sprinkle with salt and any optional seasonings. Toss to coat evenly.

  3. Preheat the air fryer

    • Preheat to 350°F (175°C) for 2–3 minutes.

  4. Air fry

    • Arrange kale in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd.

    • Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 5–7 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.

  5. Check for doneness

    • Kale should be crisp and dry, not browned.

    • If needed, cook in 30-second increments until crisp.

  6. Cool slightly and serve
Kale chips become crispier as they cool.

Tips for Perfect Kale Chips

  • Less oil is better; too much makes them soggy.

  • Keep an eye on them in the last 1–2 minutes to prevent burning.

  • If some chips cook faster, remove them and continue cooking the rest.

Flavor Variations

  • Cheesy: add nutritional yeast after cooking

  • Lemon: finish with a light squeeze of lemon juice

  • Asian-inspired: use sesame oil and a pinch of soy sauce powder

  • Spicy: add cayenne or chili-lime seasoning
