Comforting, hearty, and packed with rich savory flavor, this air fryer shepherd’s pie features a delicious layer of seasoned meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes that turn beautifully golden in the air fryer. It’s a cozy homemade meal that’s perfect for family dinners and easy enough for weeknights.

Traditionally made with lamb, shepherd’s pie can also be prepared with ground beef for a cottage pie variation. The air fryer creates a crisp, lightly browned potato topping while keeping the filling warm and juicy underneath.


Ingredients

For the Meat Filling

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground lamb or ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • ½ cup peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Mashed Potato Topping

  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup milk or cream
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork tender, about 15 minutes.

Drain well.

Mash with:

  • butter
  • milk
  • salt
  • pepper

Mix until smooth and creamy.

Set aside.


2. Cook the Filling

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Add onion and carrot. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.

Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Stir in the ground lamb or beef and cook until browned.

Drain excess fat if needed.

Mix in:

  • tomato paste
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • thyme
  • salt
  • pepper

Pour in beef broth and simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.

Stir in peas.

The filling should be rich and saucy but not watery.


3. Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie

Spoon the meat filling into a small air fryer-safe baking dish.

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top.

Use a fork to create textured ridges on the potatoes — this helps create crispy golden peaks.

Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top if using.


4. Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 180°C / 350°F for 3–5 minutes.


5. Air Fry

Place the baking dish into the air fryer basket.

Cook at 180°C / 350°F for 12–15 minutes until:

  • the top is golden brown
  • the edges are bubbling
  • the filling is heated through

For extra browning, cook an additional 2 minutes.
