Crispy, chewy tofu nuggets coated in smoky-sweet BBQ sauce and air-fried until golden. High-protein, vegan-friendly, and great for snacks, wraps, or bowls.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 14 oz (400 g) extra-firm tofu
  • 1–2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or neutral oil (optional, for crispiness)

Coating

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

BBQ Sauce

  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (vegan if needed)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (optional, for tang)
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder or cayenne (optional, for heat)

Optional Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Chopped green onions
  • Fresh parsley

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Paper towels or clean kitchen towel
  • Tongs

Instructions

Step 1: Press the Tofu

  1. Drain tofu.
  2. Wrap in a clean towel or paper towels.
  3. Press for 15–20 minutes to remove excess water.

This helps it get crispy.


Step 2: Cut into Nuggets

  1. Slice tofu into bite-sized cubes or rectangles.
  2. Keep pieces uniform for even cooking.

Step 3: Season the Tofu

Place tofu in a bowl and add:

  • Soy sauce
  • Optional olive oil

Toss gently to coat.

Let sit 5 minutes.


Step 4: Coat with Cornstarch Mix

In a separate bowl mix:

  • Cornstarch
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Add tofu pieces and toss until fully coated.

Shake off excess powder lightly.


Step 5: Air Fry First Cook

  1. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Lightly spray basket with oil.
  3. Arrange tofu in a single layer.

Cook:

  • 12–15 minutes

Shake basket halfway through.

Tofu should be golden and crisp on edges.


Step 6: Make BBQ Sauce

Mix in a bowl:

  • BBQ sauce
  • Maple syrup (optional)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Chili powder (optional)

Stir until smooth.


Step 7: Coat the Nuggets

  1. Place air-fried tofu in a large bowl.
  2. Add BBQ sauce.
  3. Toss until evenly coated.

Step 8: Final Air Fry (Sticky Finish)

  1. Return coated tofu to air fryer.
  2. Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.

This caramelizes the sauce and makes it sticky.


Step 9: Serve

Serve hot with:

  • Rice or quinoa
  • Coleslaw
  • Wraps or sandwiches
  • Veggie bowls

Variations

Spicy BBQ Nuggets

Add:

  • Extra cayenne or hot sauce

Sweet BBQ Nuggets

Add:

  • More maple syrup or brown sugar

Asian BBQ Style

Replace BBQ sauce with:

  • Teriyaki or hoisin sauce

Extra Crispy Version

  • Double coat with cornstarch
