  • 1 small onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup cream or milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried herbs (thyme or Italian seasoning)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prep the potatoes

  • Boil potatoes until just fork-tender (don’t overcook).
  • Let cool slightly, then slice into rounds.

2. Cook the meatballs

  • If raw, brown them in a pan until cooked through.
  • If pre-cooked, just warm them slightly.

3. Build the layers

  • Grease a baking dish.
  • Add a layer of sliced potatoes.
  • Add onions, garlic, and meatballs.
  • Season lightly.
  • Sprinkle cheese.
  • Repeat layers, finishing with cheese on top.

4. Add cream

  • Pour cream or milk evenly over the dish.
  • Dot with butter for extra richness.

5. Bake

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes
  • Top should be golden and bubbling.

🔥 Tips to make it really good

  • Use Gruyère-style cheese for a more classic French flavor profile
  • Add a little mustard to the cream for depth
  • Let it rest 10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely
  • Toss in mushrooms or spinach for extra texture

🍽️ What it’s closest to

This sits somewhere between:

  • Gratin Dauphinois (creamy layered potatoes)
  • and a hearty meatball casserole
