Air Fryer Fried Alligator Recipe
Crispy on the outside, tender inside — this air fryer version uses much less oil than deep frying.
Ingredients
- 1 lb alligator meat, cut into bite-size pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1–2 tbsp hot sauce
For the Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornmeal
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Other
- Cooking spray or oil spray
- Lemon wedges (optional)
- Dipping sauce (ranch, remoulade, or spicy mayo)
Instructions
1. Marinate the Alligator
In a bowl, combine:
- Buttermilk
- Hot sauce
Add the alligator pieces and coat well.
Cover and refrigerate for:
- 30 minutes to 2 hours
This helps tenderize the meat.
2. Prepare the Coating
In another bowl, mix:
- Flour
- Cornmeal
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Cayenne
- Salt
- Black pepper
3. Coat the Meat
- Remove alligator pieces from the marinade.
- Let excess buttermilk drip off.
- Dredge each piece in the flour mixture until fully coated.
For extra crunch:
- Dip again in buttermilk and coat a second time.
4. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat to:
- 200°C / 400°F for 3–5 minutes
5. Air Fry
- Lightly spray the basket with oil.
- Arrange pieces in a single layer.
- Spray tops lightly with oil.
Cook at:
- 200°C / 400°F for 8–10 minutes
Shake or flip halfway through cooking.
Cook until:
- Golden brown
- Crispy
- Internal temperature reaches safe doneness
6. Serve
Serve hot with:
- Lemon wedges
- Ranch
- Cajun remoulade
- Spicy mayo
