🧅🥧 Homemade Caramelized Onion Tart (Vegan)

🧺 Ingredients

Crust:

  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ cup olive oil or cold vegan butter

  • 3–4 tbsp cold water

Caramelized onions:

  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, helps caramelize)

  • Salt to taste

Creamy filling:

  • ¾ cup silken tofu or soaked cashews (blended)

  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • Salt & black pepper

Extras (optional but great):

  • Fresh thyme or rosemary

  • Vegan cheese shreds

  • Balsamic glaze drizzle


👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the crust
    Mix flour and salt. Add oil/butter and rub in. Add cold water until dough forms.
    Press into a tart pan. Chill 15 minutes.

  2. Caramelize onions
    Cook onions in olive oil on low heat 25–30 minutes, stirring often, until deep golden and sweet. Add sugar + salt near the end.

  3. Blend filling
    Blend tofu/cashews with nutritional yeast, mustard, garlic, lemon, salt, and pepper until smooth.

  4. Assemble
    Spread creamy filling over crust. Top with caramelized onions. Sprinkle herbs or vegan cheese.

  5. Bake
    Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30–35 minutes until set and lightly golden.

  6. Cool slightly & serve
    Finish with cracked pepper or balsamic drizzle ✨
