Vegan Crispy Cauliflower

Yield

Serves 3–4 people


Ingredients

For the Cauliflower

  • 1 medium cauliflower (cut into bite-size florets)

Batter

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup plant milk (soy, almond, or oat)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Coating

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko works best for extra crunch)

Optional spices for coating:

  • ½ tsp chili powder

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika


Step 1: Prepare the Cauliflower

  1. Wash the cauliflower.

  2. Cut into small bite-sized florets.

  3. Pat them dry with a towel.

Dry cauliflower helps the batter stick better.


Step 2: Make the Batter

In a bowl combine:

  • flour

  • plant milk

  • garlic powder

  • onion powder

  • paprika

  • salt

  • pepper

Whisk until smooth.

The batter should be similar to pancake batter.
If too thick, add a little plant milk.


Step 3: Prepare Breadcrumb Coating

In another bowl add:

  • breadcrumbs

  • optional spices

Mix well.


Step 4: Coat the Cauliflower

  1. Dip each cauliflower floret into the batter.

  2. Let excess batter drip off.

  3. Roll it in breadcrumbs until fully coated.

Place coated florets on a tray.


Method 1: Baking (Healthier)

Preheat

Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F).

Bake

  1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

  2. Place cauliflower pieces on the tray.

  3. Spray lightly with oil.

Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and crispy.

Flip halfway through baking.


Method 2: Frying (Extra Crispy)

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F).

  2. Fry cauliflower in batches.

  3. Cook 3–4 minutes until golden.

Place on paper towels to drain oil.


Optional Sauce (Vegan Buffalo Style)

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup hot sauce

  • 2 tbsp vegan butter or olive oil

  • 1 tsp maple syrup

Instructions:

  1. Heat ingredients in a small pan.

  2. Toss crispy cauliflower in the sauce.


Serving Ideas

Serve with:

  • vegan ranch dip

  • garlic aioli

  • sweet chili sauce

  • barbecue sauce

Garnish with:

  • chopped green onions

  • sesame seeds

  • fresh parsley


Tips for Extra Crispiness

  1. Use panko breadcrumbs for the best crunch.

  2. Do not overcrowd the tray or pan.

  3. Bake at high temperature.

  4. Double coat for extra crunch (batter → crumbs → batter → crumbs).
