🌱 Vegan Custard Buns Recipe

🧾 Ingredients

🥛 Vegan Custard Filling

  • 1½ cups plant milk (soy or almond)

  • 3 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)

  • 1 tbsp vegan butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch turmeric (for color – optional)

Method

  1. Whisk milk, sugar, and cornflour in a saucepan.

  2. Cook on low heat, stirring constantly until thick.

  3. Remove from heat, stir in vegan butter & vanilla.

  4. Cool completely, then refrigerate until firm.


🍞 Bun Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • ¾ cup warm plant milk

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • ½ tsp salt

Method

  1. Mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Rest 5 minutes.

  2. Add flour, salt, oil. Knead into soft dough.

  3. Cover and let rise 1–1½ hours (double in size).


🥟 Assemble

  1. Divide dough into balls.

  2. Flatten, add 1–2 tbsp custard in center.

  3. Seal well and shape into buns.


🔥 Cooking Options

🫧 Steamed (classic & fluffy)

  • Steam buns over medium heat 12–15 minutes

  • Rest 5 minutes before opening lid

🔥 Baked (golden top)

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–22 minutes

  • Brush with plant milk before baking
